General FAQs about catching trains

What bus connections can I get from Britomart?

Yes, frequent buses to Queen Street and Karangahape Road depart from outside the Britomart Transport Centre. If you are using an adult monthly train pass, you can travel for free on Waka Pacific, North Star, GO WEST and Metrolink bus services to and from Britomart Station from anywhere within the Inner City zone. Simply show your pass to the bus driver.

Use the MAXX Journey Planner to make your trip easy. All you need to do is select your departure and destination locations and when you wish to travel. The Journey Planner will advise which buses you can catch from Britomart and provide times, fares and maps for your trips.

What is a transfer train?

Transfer trains currently only operate on the Southern and Eastern line. These are marked on the timetable as a T (for transfer) next to the departure time. There is a box on the timetable to indicate when a transfer occurs at Otahuhu Station. If you are making a train transfer, please ask the train guard for a transfer ticket so that your ticket is valid on the connecting service. Transfer tickets must be handed in to onboard staff on the second half of the journey.

What is an express train?

Some trains are express trains and don't stop at all stations. These normally run during school and commuter peak hours. These are marked on the timetable next to the departure time as XP (Express) or LS (Limited Stop). When any train approaches a station stand behind the lines marked on the platform for your safety.

What is the difference between a stage and a zone?

For cash fares and 10 ride train tickets, Auckland is divided into 6 stages. Distance based stage points are used to calculate the fare charged. Stage points are set at specific points along the railway line. If your journey travels across a stage point then the fare increases. For instance if you were to make a journey from New Lynn Station to Mt Eden Station you would pass through stage points at Mt Albert and Kingsland. Therefore you'd travel a total of three stages.

Stages and Zones

For monthly train passes, Auckland is divided into zones offering the choice of an all zone pass or less expensive zone specific passes. For example the City Monthly pass offers unlimited train travel between Otahuhu and New Lynn Stations, which is great if you work in the CBD.  If you are using an adult monthly pass you can travel for free on Waka Pacific, GO WEST, North Star and Metrolink bus services to and from Britomart Station from anywhere within the Inner City zone. Simply show your pass to the bus driver.

Can I travel on the train if I'm in a wheelchair?

Wheelchairs may be carried at any time and most trains are equipped with wheelchair ramps. Some types of small mobility scooters may also be carried in off-peak times. If you require assistance boarding the train or traveling on the train, please ask either the onboard or platform staff.

What should I do if I have lost or found something on a train?

If you have left  something on a train you should contact the train operator, Veolia Transport on 09 969 777. If you find something on a train please hand it to the conductor or a staff member as soon as possible.
