Consultation Background and Overview

During March and April 2011 Auckland Transport consulted on proposed improvements to bus services around the Auckland CBD and surrounding city suburbs like Ponsonby, Parnell and Pt Chevalier.

Bus routes included in this review were:

  • The LINK
  • City Circuit
  • 004 and 005 - (Herne Bay, Westmere)
  • 006 - (Newmarket - St Lukes - Unitec)
  • 007 - (Pt Chevalier - St Heliers)
  • 010 and 011 - (Ponsonby - Onehunga)
  • 015 to 018 - (Ponsonby, Herne Bay, Westmere)
  • 024 to 028 - (Richmond Rd, Westmere)
  • 034 and 035 - (Westmere, Williamson Avenue)
  • 042 to 045 - (Pt Chevalier, Unitec, Mt Albert)

There was a full public consultation that allowed anyone to give input, as well as targeted engagement with key stakeholder groups.

Extensive communication of the proposal during the consultation period included:

  • Brochures 50,000 brochures delivered to households
    • handed out at key bus stops and on key buses by MAXX Ambassadors
    • in libraries, MAXX walk in Centre , NZ Bus Ticket Agents, some council offices
  • Posters, signs, real time messages
  • MAXX website
  • Auckland Transport, NZ Bus and Auckland Council websites
  • Media coverage in NZ Herald and community newspapers
  • Newspaper and online advertising
  • Email newsletters to selected databases

These aimed to raise awareness of the project and inform people of how they could give their feedback.

Feedback was provided via an online questionnaire and feedback forms. Those who did not have access to the internet were able to provide their feedback via a paper form upon request. Over 1250 responses were received during the consultation period from individuals, business associations, local boards and other organisations.

Auckland Transport has reviewed all the feedback received and used it to make final route and service level decisions. Some of the feedback received was outside the scope of this review and has been passed onto the relevant Auckland Transport team for inclusion in other reviews or projects.

Summary of Consultation and Decisions

You can view a summary of the consultation feedback and the final decisions here.

In making these decisions, Auckland Transport is aware that, as is the case whenever bus services are changed, some existing customers will be disadvantaged.

The overall objective of these changes is to simplify the route network so that services are improved for the majority and so that they are easier for new users to understand in the future.  However, some people will not be able to make their particular journey by bus as easily as they can now. There may be other options, for example walking further at one end of the journey.

Auckland Transport apologises if any inconvenience is caused to some existing customers as a result of these changes.

All of the changes will work together to:

  • Improve the frequency, reliability and connectivity of central area bus services
  • Make bus services that circulate within the Auckland CBD simpler and easier to understand
  • Better connect the developing Wynyard Quarter
  • Speed up the LINK, as well as bus services to Ponsonby, Herne Bay, Pt Chevalier and other Western Bays suburbs
  • Better connect more inner Auckland suburbs with the CBD and each other by creating an Outer Loop service similar to the existing LINK
  • Make it easier and more comfortable to get around.

What happens next?

Auckland Transport will be implemented these changes on 21 August 2011. The changes were communicated in a range of ways to bus users before they were carried out.

As a result of this consultation, new LINK bus services have been implemented and many Western Bays services have been changed.
