Fares and payment

How fares are calculated

Most train cash fares are charged on the distance you wish to travel. Distance based stage points are used to calculate the fare charged.

Stage points are set at specific points along the railway line and are set up the same as the bus stage points. If your journey travels across a stage point then the fare increases. For instance if you were to make a journey from New Lynn Station to Mt Eden Station you would pass through stage points at Mt Albert and Kingsland. Therefore you'd travel a total of three stages.

Paying your fare

You do not need to buy a ticket before you get on a train, however to save time it is appreciated if you purchase your tickets before boarding. If you choose to purchase your ticket onboard the train, staff will come around the train and collect your fare after you have boarded. Trains accept cash for payment of fares and passes. Exact change is appreciated, however, small notes can usually be accepted, and change given. See train fare and pass information.

Single ride, ten trip tickets and monthly passes can be obtained on the train, at the Britomart Transport Centre, Papakura Station or any nominated train ticket agent. Tertiary passes can be obtained from selected tertiary ticket agents.
