Safety Tips

At the station

  • Check the timetable carefully to confirm late night train and weekend train times
  • Avoid running at stations, especially in wet weather
  • Keep your belongings with you at all times
  • If you see anything suspicious, please report it to staff at manned stations or at unman stations (or manned stations outside of normal operating hours) use the yellow orange button point located on the station platform
  • Remember that for your safety rollerblading, skateboarding, bicycle riding, playing with and drinking alcohol are not permitted on the station platform
  • Don't rush when moving up or down stairs or escalators. Concentrate on your footing t avoid stumbling or losing your balance.
  • Keep to the left on escalators.
  • Stay behind the marked yellow/white platform edge lines whilst waiting on the platforms.

Catching the train

  • Always use proper paths and official pedestrian crossings to enter and leave a station cross from one platform to another.
  • Only step over the yellow safety line when the train has stopped
  • Never try to catch a moving train or hold onto the door handles when the train has star to move
  • Give way to passengers disembarking before boarding the train
  • When boarding the train, mind the gap between the train and the platform
  • When the warning signal sounds to alert that the doors will be closing, ensure you kee clear and do not obstruct the doors

Travelling at night

  • If you are travelling alone sit near the front of the train
  • Choose to sit in carriages with other customers rather than by yourself
  • Pre-plan your journey and sign up for SMS updates to keep informed of service chang
  • When waiting for a train, stand in well-lit areas, preferably in or near the shelter
  • Refrain from or listen to music on a lower volume at night so that you can stay aware c night environment
  • If you feel at all vulnerable at an unmanned station, use the Emergency Help Point to b the attention of the CCTV Operator to you while waiting for the train
  • Check the MAXX Timetables before coming to the station to reduce the risk of long wa times along

At crossings

  • Always use formed pedestrian crossings or keep on the footpath at road level crossing
  • When there are no alarm bells or flashing lights always stop and look both ways to se train is coming
  • If a train is coming wait for the train to pass before crossing the tracks
  • If you cannot see far enough along the track in both directions always wait for alarm be and flashing lights to stop before you cross
  • Two tracks can mean two trains. If a train has stopped at a station or if a train has just past, the alarms could be going because of a second train in the other direction.
  • Never walk down the tracks - it is dangerous and illegal with a maximum fine of $10,000
  • Never use railway bridges - there is only enough space for trains
  • Be aware that some trains extend well beyond the track - you can be hit even if you are some distance from the tracks
  • A fast train creates a vacuum which can suck you in if you are too close
