Rail Safety Awareness Week – 23-29 August 2010

About the event

Established in 2006, National Rail Safety Week is an Australasian Railway Association initiative aimed at increasing community awareness about rail safety and improving behaviour at and around railways.

The week positively promotes safe road user behaviour at level crossings to Australian and New Zealand communities whilst lending itself to expansion into other areas of rail safety, including trespassing, vandalism, platform safety, security and passenger safety.

National Rail Safety Week provides a mechanism to positively promote safe behaviour at and around railways.

What happened in 2009?

The theme for 2009 was 'All Level Crossing Collisions Are Avoidable'. Activities took place between 27 July – 2 August.

The aim of the week was to:

  • Raise awareness in both metropolitan and rural areas of safe road user behaviour at level crossings.
  • Emphasise the impact that level crossing accidents have on train drivers and rail operators.
  • Encourage widespread understanding of actions being taken by the rail industry to address the issue.
