Bike Wise Month has a huge selection of fantastic, fun-filled, safe cycling events for all Kiwi's to enjoy. Maybe you haven't been on a bike in years, or maybe you're teaching your kids to ride, perhaps you've been thinking about riding to work but don't know where or how to start, or it could be that you just love cycling already. Whatever your state of mind, there's something for everyone.
Go By Bike Day will be happening all over NZ on Wednesday 17 February 2010. Thousands of Kiwi's will strap on their helmets and try getting around in a more active, healthy and money saving way. Go By Bike Day is a great way to encourage Kiwi's to leave the car at home and try cycling to work or school for a day. It's fun, easy and costs nothing!
Bring your bike on-board
MAXX is supporting Go By Bike Day by offering all cyclists FREE Bike space on-board MAXX trains on all lines before 7am and after 9am.
In February 2009 nearly 50 New Zealand towns and cities competed for the title of Cycle Mad City by getting as many people as possible to follow the mayor on a fun bike ride. Rain or shine, Kiwi's around the country showed how much they love their bikes by turning out in force behind their Mayor. A point was given for each participant, and bonus points were given for community leaders, local and national celebrities.
The Bike Wise Battle has been renamed and is now the Bike Wise Challenge.
The Bike Wise Challenge runs from 1-28 February 2010 and is open to any New Zealand organisation (businesses, schools, churches, scout/guide groups etc). The Challenge is a fun, free, online competition which encourages you to swap your chair for a bike saddle and give cycling a go during Bike Wise Month. Organisations compete against others of a similar size in their region to see who can get the highest percentage of members/staff riding their bikes.
It's all about getting people to try cycling, and to think about swapping some car journeys for trips by bike (sorry, excercycles don't count)!
There are fantastic prizes for the winning organisations, as well as spot prizes for individuals.
Bike Wise is a nationally coordinated initiative that promotes cycling as a sustainable, fun, healthy and enjoyable means of transport, and cycle safety. Bike Wise is funded by the NZ Transport Agency and the Ministry of Health and is the only nationwide programme of cycling events.
