World Car Free Day is an international event celebrated every 22 September in which people are encouraged to get around without their car - highlighting public transport, cycling and walking as alternative modes of transport.
World Carfree Day was established in 2000 as a grassroots movement by the World Carfree Network to coincide with the European Mobility Week. It has grown to involve official and unofficial participants in over 1,000 cities in 40 countries.
The official worldwide event is 22 September 2010

On 22 September 2009 Aucklanders were challenged to pledge to go car free for a day.
The competition encouraged people to nominate family and friends to also go car free. All entries went in the draw to prizes including a discovery pass and a mountain bike. Over 1900 entries were received.
Wendy Chen was the lucky winner of a GIANT bike which was provided in partnership with GIANT bikes and Bike 75 in Sale Street.
On winning the prize Wendy said 'I always take the bus into the city to work as I live in Freemans Bay, this is a real surprise and everyone in my office is jealous, I'll be using the bike at weekends to get about'.
