Tertiary Student Discounts

Step 1 - The Basics

Who is eligible?

Full-time tertiary students enrolled and attending an accredited, approved full time tertiary course at a registered institute or private training company within the Auckland region are eligible for a discount off selected bus, train and ferry fares.
The discount is up to 40% off selected bus, train and ferry fares. The Discount is off the adult cash fare and applies to purchases of tertiary 10 ride ticket and 7-Day Northern Passes.
Please check the relevant bus, ferry and train fares for relevant tertiary fares.

What if I attend an institute outside of Auckland?

If you reside permanently in the Auckland region and are enrolled and attending an accredited, approved full time tertiary course with a tertiary / private institute outside the Auckland region, you may be eligible for a MAXX Tertiary ID Sticker. Contact MAXX via email or on 09-366 6400 to find out whether you are eligible to apply for the MAXX Tertiary ID Sticker

Step 2 - The MAXX Student ID Sticker

Where do I get a MAXX Student ID Sticker?

MAXX Student ID Stickers are issued by registered tertiary institutions within the Auckland region. These include the University of Auckland, AUT, Unitec, Massey University and Manukau Institute of Technology and over 180 private tertiary institutions. Please check with your institute for more information.

Step 3 - Buying your tertiary tickets

Where can I buy tertiary discounted bus, train and ferry tickets?

Tertiary discounted bus and train tickets can be only be purchased from selected bus and train ticket agents. Discounted ferry tickets are available from all ferry ticket agents. There are over 80 ticket agents including Auckland University, AUT, Massey University, MIT, Unitec and Britomart.

What identification is required?

In order to purchase tertiary discounted tickets or travel on public transport utilising tertiary tickets, students must show a valid Student ID card from their tertiary institution with a MAXX Student ID Sticker applied.

For Fullers Waiheke Island Ferries, tertiary students must also apply for the Waiheke Island Tertiary 10 Ticket Scheme. Applications are available at www.fullers.co.nz.

Step 4 - Boarding your service

Is any Student ID required when boarding?

Always show your Student ID card with your MAXX Tertiary ID Sticker when boarding.

An adult fare will be charged to tertiary students if correct ID is not shown on bus, train and ferry services.

Where can I go in Auckland?

Considerable effort is made to ensure the tertiary travel discount applies as widely as possible.

Discounted tertiary travel is available on all services operated under a passenger services agreement between ARTA and the operator. It is also available on commercial services where there is a concessionary fare scheme agreement between the operator and ARTA.

What are Tertiary Shuttles

Auckland University of Technology runs a shuttle bus service between the City Campus, the North Shore Campus and the Manukau Campus.

Unitec runs a free shuttle around the Pt Chevalier campus. Another shuttle runs from Mt Albert train station and the Pt Chevalier shops. See more information on the Unitec Shuttle
