Types of Tickets

The type of ticket you should buy depends on how far you are travelling, how often you travel and whether you need to travel on more than one method of transport. It also depends on which company operates your service because different operators offer different tickets.

If you are a regular public transport user most bus, train and ferry operators offer monthly or 10 ride passes offering discounts from the cash fares. See the full range of tickets and passes available.

The most common ticket types are listed below, including five special integrated passes accepted by multiple transport operators:

Single trip cash fare

This ticket is best if you are making a single journey. If you make this journey most days, the options below will be more cost effective.

10 ride

This ticket offers you multiple trips at a discount for a set number of stages. If you make the same trip frequently, it will be cheaper for you to buy a 10 ride ticket rather than single trip cash fares.

Monthly pass

Monthly passes enable unlimited travel on services provided by a specific operator over a one month period based on regional areas or zones. If you are a regular traveller, monthly passes are a convenient and good value way to travel.

Stored value card

Most bus operators offer stored value or smart cards. These cards allow you to load a bulk amount of money on them that is then deducted each time you make a trip. This saves you the hassle of carrying cash and you will also receive a discount off the single trip cash fare.

Multi - operator passes

If you need to travel on more than one mode of transport to get to your destination, for example bus and train, an integrated pass may be more cost effective. This will save you buying tickets or passes from more than one operator. Some operators also offer group passes, day passes and other ticket types. If you are not sure which ticket or pass would be best for you, call us on 09 366 6400, ask the driver or on-board staff, or contact the service operator directly.
